Pre fader listen vs post fader listen


Hello and welcome to this week's article!

Today we're going to check out an important concept which is part of a proper gain staging setup, a simple check that will save us from having unwanted distortion into our tracks, the pre fader listen!.

By default, all the DAWS are set on post fader metering, meaning that if we are moving the volume fader in one channel, the meter of that channel (and the stereo buss) will rise or reduce accordingly.

The problem is that if the volume fader has as consequence the rise of the volume until a track clips, we don't know whether that channel, that recorded track with all the plugins processing it, is really already in distortion (or if it's too low in volume) BEFORE moving the volume fader (in that case we will have to check out whether there is some plugin that is clipping the signal or if the actual track is clipping).

To solve this problem we can choose in the DAW options (basically in every DAW) pre fader listen (something that is present also in many physical mixers), which swaps the position of the volume fader and the meter in single tracks or in the whole mixer.

What does this mean practically? It means that the volume fader still does its job, raising and lowering the volume, but the meter will keep showing us, regardless of the volume we decided, how hot is the audio track before entering in the volume fader, and whether the signal is already in clip or not (sometimes for example it's already in clip because the track is passing through some plugin, like some Compressor which maybe has a little too much make up gain).

By verifying the input and output level of all tracks (and therefore of all plugins on each track) we can make sure no track is clipping, and this is essential to perform a proper gain staging, thus having a perfeclty clear song.

One final note: press only one PFL button at a time, otherwise the meter will show the combination of all the active channels and plugins (in the stereo buss) and you won't know which one is too high or too low.

Avoid snake oil and use only stuff you understand!



Hello and welcome to this week's article!

Today's article is a bit different from the usual, and it can be considered as a prosecution of our article about mixing only with stock plugins.

Mixing and mastering is a process that can be stressful at times, but it's also a moment of discovery and of creativity, in seeing the artist's vision coming together in the form of music that can be enjoyed by everyone. 
It's a process of discovery when putting together the pieces of the musical puzzle and fitting them until the picture is clear, but there is also discovery in trying every time new ways to improve and obtain better results, and this involves studying, reading, trying all the new plugins or hardware processors that we can, and all the time there is something new and more shiny that comes out.

Trying new stuff is part of the fun, in the end, but if I've learned anything in these years that I've been writing this blog, is that almost nothing is a real game changer, and that around 70% of what is advertised as a better version of what you already have brings an improvement as noticeable as "the emperor's new clothes".

Sure, there are a few game changers, for example the Neural Dsp plugins really brought the amp modeling a step forward, or Oeksound Soothe made eliminating unwanted resonances fast and easy, but besides these rare cases, there are so many good and cheap (or free, or stock) plugins out there that it's really hard to justify the real need of buying a new one, except for really just have a new toy to play with.

What I'm trying to say is that unless you're really looking for something specific that you don't have, buying a new compressor or a new equalizer most likely won't bring a real improvement in what you're currently using, and after trying so many plugins you get to a point in which you have a superficial knowledge of many of them, but you don't really know any of them very well, and this is one of the differences between an amateur and a professionist: a professionist usually has his experience built upon having something that he trusts, and he used it 1000 times, until he got to know all the ins and outs of every unit in the chain and how to obtain the best from each one of them.

The ideal point would be to choose for example a quality compressor, a quality eq, a quality delay and so on and to use them consistently until we get to a point in which we know exactly what settings are the ideal ones for our signal chain/gain staging, so that we can just plug and play, saving time and not having to do hours of trial and error looking for the right setting.

In conclusion I would suggest you, if you are at the peak of your gear acquisition syndrome, to try to stop buying anything for like 3 months and force yourself only to use what you have, I guarantee you that at the end of the third month you will have reach a level of knowledge of your plugins (or hardware processors) that will allow you to obtain results that you wouldn't have thought possible at the beginning of the trimester.
Most importantly, you might come to realize that a lot of the things advertised as "the next plugin you absolutely need" are not real game changers, in facts, most of them are what can be defined as "snake oil".

What's the difference between a limiter and a clipper?


Hello everyone and welcome to this week's article!

Today we are going to talk about a topic that has been the center of a lot of discussions in the world of audio engineers online: is it better to use a Clipper or a Limiter?

The limiter as we know works as a Compressor, only with extreme settings (a fast attack and a ratio of 20:1 up to infinity): the part of the wave that surpasses the threshold is dragged down, producing the classic "squashed" tone.

The Clipper instead doesn't drag the sound down, it choppes it off like it used to do (unwanted) when back in the hardware era a signal was hitting an analog-to-digital converter too hard.
This as we have seen in our article about clippers creates a double edge sword: it doesn't sound as squashed and it allows us usually to raise the volume more than with a limiter, but one single 0.1% too much and it will create aliasing and distortion so bad that we will be sorely missing the limiter.

Using a clipper on a master allows us to raise the volume more than with a limiter, because this "shaving off" part of the tone forces the converter to overshoot and try to recreate the missing part of the sound, and if it's reasonably small, it manages.

My opinion is that if we have our dynamic range under control (meaning that there are no instruments that randomly peak like 6db above the rest here and there through the track), for example we have been good with clip gain, buss compression etc, it's better to use a clipper, it will allow us to reach the same levels of volume of a limiter if not more, avoiding the usual squashed effect.
If instead we have a quite dynamic mix and we want to preserve the dynamic excursion maybe it's better to go for a limiter, because the eventual peaks will be brought down without introducing heavy crackling.

Visual references when mastering



Hello and welcome to this week's article!

Today we're going to talk about a topic that ties together our mastering article and the one about frequency analyzers: how to use visual references to help us when mastering!

The first tool I want to talk about is Izotope Tonal Balance Control, a tool that is available for separate purchase and that is also included in other Izotope bundles, which is very simple: they have analyzed thousands of record, divided by genre, and have found the average eq curve of the tunes, so you can compare your master to this average to see where you're at: does your master need more low end? Less? Does it need more air? 

This product is as simple as brilliant, and probably is the most useful mastering tool that came out in the recent years, because sometimes your room is not treated, or your monitors or headphones are not the best, and certain areas of your mix can go unnoticed: this way you can easily find where there is too much (or too little) energy compared with the average of the other commercial recordings, and it's a great starting point also just to go back to our mix project and correct there.

The second one, for much more precise adjustments, is Voxengo Span, a free plugin (click here to download it): with this frequency analyzer not only you can see in great detail the analysis of your spectrum, but you can zoom to the extreme, and this is interesting because it's like looking at our mix with a magnifying glass: if we want we can easily go resonance hunting and with an eq lower, surgically, all the parts in which there is an accumulation of energy (for example too many instruments in the same frequency area, which produce a spike in volume), this way we can mix some of those instruments differently, or lower with an eq these spikes: in any case the aim is to free headroom without harming the mix, cleaning up the troublesome areas so that this way we will have more room to push our master, and have all the available volume in the areas we want.

How loud should a master be in 2021 (with free VST plugin)



Hello and welcome to this week's article!

Today we're going to integrate and expand our article about Mastering levels for streaming, cd and club play (click here to read it) updating it to the latest requirements and tools.

Levels in mastering are an evolving thing, it's something that has been changing through time with the evolution of the supports, and any mastering engineer needs to be up to date with the industry standard requirements, if he/she wants to nail the perfect levels.

Let's start by saying that times are changed from when we were talking about the Loudness war (click here for a dedicated article), a time in which everyone was competing in having the loudest (and often distorted) master, and the answer to that has been the fact that the main streaming platforms (Youtube, Spotify, Apple music and so on) apply a sort of normalization to the track to make them sound coherent, with the result that oversquashed masters gets a big penalty in terms of db.

In short: the louder (and less dynamic) your master is, the more db the platform will subtract to make it sound quieter; you can see how many db your master will be reduced by uploading it in this page:

The page will analyze for free your master and tell you with good approximation how many db will be reduced in all the main streaming platforms.

In order to reach the correct levels for the modern times the best approach is to check out the streaming platforms help section and read the suggested levels, in this case we are going to check out the Spotify ones:
they suggest -14db of Integrated LUFS (integrated means average, not peak) and -1db of True peak (-2db in case of a master louder than -14db of Integrated LUFS).
You can of course upload hotter masters, they will just be reduced in volume, so that they will sound at the same volume of the other songs, but more compressed and distorted.

LUFS are loudness units full scale, which is a modern value used to calculate the perceived loudness, and it's used mainly in streaming platforms, while True peak is the maximum absolute level of the signal waveform, and both values needs to be monitored after the limiter, since even if you put -1db of ceiling, the true peak can be louder, for example -0.3db in reality.

How to measure those values for free? With Youlean Loudness Meter plugin, a free Vst that does exactly that (and monitors also the dynamic range!), and based on that you can export your songs to make them sound the best they can be in every platform.

How to master a song with free plugins part 3/3: finalizing the track!



Now that we have our track nice and pumping we need to check just few little things before exporting in any format we want (for example mp3 with a bitrate of minimum 192khz up, or a wave track at 16bit and 44.1khz to be burned into a cd): we need to make sure the sound it's not too squashed, and to do this we need to monitor the RMS levels.

The RMS level (click here for a dedicated article) is the average loudness of the master, and it's a value that we need to monitor how pleasant or ear fatiguing our master is; keep this in great consideration because it's a make or break rule that can be possibly considered the single most important thing to not screw up everything when mastering.

The discussion about RMS levels bring us to a broader discussion about the Loudness War (click here for a dedicated article): it has been a "war" among mastering engineers between the '90s and the early 2000s, in which noone won and music just sounded worse and worse.
Mastering engineers were pushing the limiter harder and harder to make their songs stand out among the others in the radio, and this led to a point in which many of the top radio songs were distorting.

Luckily this bad period seems to be coming to an end: most of the music today is listened through streaming services such as Spotify, Youtube or Apple Music, and these platforms all features a form of audio compensation of the loudness of the tracks, ending up with lowering the volume of the loudest ones in order to make them coherent, with the results that the tracks that won the loudness wars 20 years ago now sound less loud than the others.

It's important to master knowing the final source in which our song will be played the most or to make different masterings according to the platform, here is an article with the correct mastering levels for the various streaming services, for CDs and for Club play.

Now that we have the right track for the right source it's the time of the trial by fire: listen to your track from as many sources as possible (car stereo, smartphone headphones, expensive speakers, laptop speakers, etc): you fill find out several little corrections to make which are essential to smoothe out the final bumps before releasing the song, and don't forget to compare it to some of your favourite masters: this way you can spot very easily whether there is some unbalance in your track.

How to master a song with free plugins part 2/3: the core of mastering!



Once we have our mastering project open and with a minimum knowledge of which are the tools required for each individual task, you will find that it's a rabbit hole as deep as the mixing itself, and different to the point that there are mastering engineers that earns a living just by doing that.

That's how different it is, and in the most expensive studios mastering engineers have whole outboards of hardware processors dedicated just for that.
Since you are reading this, though, I assume you are not one of these mastering engineers, so here's our article with the Best 5 free mastering plugins 2019, which should already give you a nice array of new tools, if you're not satisfied with what you can find bundled in your DAW.

What matters here, in the core of mastering, it's the subtlety: we don't want to modify the complex and delicate balance of our mix, so what we need is to make the sound just a bit more stable, smooth and euphonic before pushing the signal with the limiter, that's why many prefers, instead of a regular broadband compressor, to use a multiband compressor (click here for a dedicated article) in order to keep things in place without coloring or altering the whole spectrum.
If we see that through these subtle modifications and corrections still the mix is unstable or unbalanced, we will have to go back to the mixing project, fix it from there and re-export the track.

Now it's time to create the song metadata (click here for a dedicated article), which will be the information hard coded in the song, such as the song title, the name of the band, the year and so on.
These informations once were optional, but today are essential since they will be the criteria based on which your song will be indexed in the computer, in your mp3 player or in your smartphone.

Pass this phase and the track will become completely impossible to find.

How to master a song with free plugins part: 1/3 the basics!



Hello and welcome to this week's article!

Today we go on with our serie "Start from here!" of omnicomprehensive articles, from which you will be able to find all the essential links of this blog organized as in a coherent way, to be used as starting point to begin browing the articles (but there are many more! Use the tags and the search engine).

Once we have done all the necessary steps, which means recording and mixing our project, it's time to tick the final boxes in our mixing project before exporting the mixed track for mastering, which is the phase in music production in which we take our track and make it loud enough to be at the level of a commercial one, and to be reproduced correctly from all devices.

In order to prepare this final track we can either just use the regular mixing tools or use a more recent approach, which is the so-called "top down mastering" (click here for a dedicated article), which consists in putting basic mastering plugins in our stereo out chain in order to know in advance how the final track will sound like, so that we will mix keeping also this additional processing part in mind, just don't forget to disable these plugins when exporting the track for the final mastering!

In addition to that it's important to fix all the little things that could be harmful to the mastering process, for example an excessive dynamic range that would damage our headroom, incorrect gain staging and so on, so make sure to read carefully our 5 tips to prepare your track for mastering!

Now we're ready to export our track, which doesn't peak above -12 to -10db, at 24 bit and that has a sample rate from 48khz up.

What we should do now is to create a new project, and import this mixed track into a stereo track.
From now, all our processing must happen in the master bus.

What do we put in the chain?
There is a wide range of processors that we can apply, which can be seen in depth in our Basic Mastering Chain article, our main article about mastering which analyzes each plugin in detail, explains how to use them and has free downloads, just remember that you don't need to use the full chain, just use the plugins you really need to give your project the right icing on the cake, or you risk to ruin your whole work!

Top down mastering: is it a good idea?



Hello and welcome to this week's article!

Today we are talking about a mastering technique that is becoming more and more prominent in these recent years (click here for a dedicated article about mastering), with the increase in Cpu performance that are allowing us to fill our projects with plugins without resource problems.

Usually mix engineers use a project in which they import their edited tracks, and there they perform the mix, which involves often a big number of tracks and plugins, then they export the song into a stereo track, re-import it in a new project and perform the mastering there.

If during the mastering phase they spot a problem, they need to re-open the mixing project, fix it, re-export everything and re-import it in the mastering one.

Why do they do this extra step?
Because this way they can edit better the final tracks, and more importantly they have the cpu completely free and they can use it exclusively for the mastering plugins.

This workflow has been the rule for the latest 20 years, but now, with the most recent processors and ram, the computational power has become fast enough to try to blend the 2 steps.
This way we can directly export the mastered song from the mixing project, or, at least, perform the mix with the already mastered sound, in order to avoid surprises when mastering.
This approach is called Top down mastering, and it consists in loading the mastering chain directly in the stereo out of our mixing project.

Which plugins do we load in the stereo out? I suggest to try with those in our Minimal Mastering Chain (click here to check it out), and from there remove and add according to our needs, trying anyway to be conservative, because usually mastering plugins are a bit heavier than the mixing ones.

Did you ever try this technique?
I personally like to use it when mixing to know what to expect in terms of sound when I will arrive to mastering, but when I'm done with mixing I remove the mastering plugins and export the track, then I re-import it in a new project and re-apply them again because I prefer to have more control when editing the final tracks.

How to create song metadata - meta tags



Hello everyone and welcome to this week's article!

Today we're going to talk about a topic that is often overlooked, but that especially now, in a time in which 99% of the music is listened via streaming and mobile phones/mp3 players, it has become quite crucial: how to enter the song informations, to make sure the author, album, track name etc are embedded in the audio track, so that once you will play them in the digital player, all the info will be indexed in the right place and the song will be easy to find among the gigabytes of music.

Usually the phase in which we dial in all these information is the mastering phase, because we need to enter them in the project before exporting the final track, and every DAW has a different menu in which to enter these information, but they look more or less the same, and the one in the pic is taken from Presonus Studio One.

Usually this window can be found in the "song information" section of the DAW, and from there you can enter a surprisingly high amount of information, but the main ones are Title, Artist, Album, Year and then you can also add the album cover as image file.
Why just these fields? It's easy: 99% of the players will index the songs only through these data, sometimes they can also index them by Genre, but it's very unlikely that they will filter by composer or arranger (but you can fill all the fields if you want to leave your watermark, of course).

Another good idea is to tag the tracks putting in front of the song name in the meta tags its position in the setlist (e.g. 01, 02, 03...), because the player doesn't know the order, and will list them alphabetically.

Is it essential today to enter the song information? Yes, because in many digital players (for example in my Android phone, which is a very common model) there's not even the option anymore to list the songs by file name, it relies exclusively in the meta tags, and the same happens for a lot of modern dj gear, so unfortunately the file name is not anymore enough to find your song in the ocean of tracks.

Do you usually enter these information in all of your tracks? This could be the right moment to start doing it.

3 tips to handle the low end in our mix / master



Hello and welcome to this week's article!
Let's start by saying this: the low end frequencies are the most inconsistent ones in a mix; they are the ones that requires more energy to be reproduced, and the bigger the speaker, the better they will sound.
The fact that a song need to sound good from any type of source (from the 100k high end tube system to the tiny speaker of our phone or laptop) poses a huge challenge to any mixing and (especially) mastering engineer, and it's virtually impossible to create something that sounds perfect from any source, also because we use when mixing (ideally) good reference monitors.


- Hi pass the useless low end rumble: not all the low end is good, there are often useless subsonics below the 50hz that are generated by the breathing in the condenser microphone, or by the singer accidentally touching the mic stand with the foot and so on, that will eat up headroom in your mix without adding anything to the song: better to cut them out.

- Use a spectrum analyzer (click here for a dedicated article with some free download): in this case you can visually see what sometimes is hard to hear, and you can compare the spectrum of your favourite songs with the one you're mixing, to find out where is the low end content and where it should be.

- Use multiple sources, each one will reveal a different aspect of your mix, this way you can perform some troubleshooting before finalizing a song (click here for an article about testing our mix on various sources).

Best 5 Free Vst plugins for mastering 2019



Hello and welcome to this week's article!
Today we're proposing the version 2019 of another 5 years old article: the best 5 Vst plugins for mastering that I have written in 2014, and this time we're focusing on the free ones!


1) Minimal System Group Stereo Buss Compressor: this cute little buss compressor has everything you need (and nothing you don't) to glue the mix in the mix buss or to shave the transients a bit in the mastering buss.

2) Blue Cat Triple Eq: this is a very good three band semi-parametric eq that offers no latency, +-40db range for each band, and it works very well to give the last surgical touches to our master, plus it has an essential mid-side function.

3) Polyverse music Wider: this is a very simple yet extremely effective tool; Wide is a stereo enhancer with just a percentage control. You can go up to 100% in order to achieve a fully stereo, phase coherent version of a mono sound, but you can also increase it up to 200% in order to have an exaggerated, larger than life sound!

4) Loudmax Limiter: this is probably the most beloved free mastering limiter, and for a reason: it sounds good. It's very simple: you just dial the output level, then you lower the threshold (thus increasing the gain) until you reach the desired gain reduction level.

5) Youlean Loudness Meter: a very complete metering tool to keep an eye on the dynamic range of our song. It's fundamental to nail the right loudness for the platform we intend to play our song on.

Using a second pair of ears to improve your mix



Hello everyone and welcome to this week's article!
Today we are talking about a simple concept that can be put in the same box of our article about Referencing, which is using the ears of someone else you trust to help you fixing what you are not noticing.

After long mixing sessions, even not continuous, our perception of the song can become a little bit distorted: even if we are experienced mix engineers, we burn in each mixing session most of our critical listening capacity in the first 45 minutes of mixing, more or less, then we get so acquainted to the sound of the song that we lose objectivity.
Sure, stopping mixing and starting over the day after will give us a fresh point of view, but if we are working on a mix for weeks (or months), there will anyway probably be details that we will not be able to point out anymore, for example the cymbals are in general too low or too high, or the mix in general has too little or too much low end.

This happens because we focus on the details: we create, for example by automating even the smallest parts, a perfect equilibrium, and this way we lose the overview of the song, to the point that when at the end we realize for example the mix lacks IN GENERAL low end, we need to destroy all the equilibrium to fix it.
And this is frustrating.

Does this sound familiar? It happens to everyone, even the most professional mix and mastering engineers, and that's why often mixers sends drafts of their songs to other engineers or musicians they trust, in various stages of completion: to have a second pair of ears capable of pointing out what we can't notice anymore.
The more often we do it during the various stages of mixing, the less we will have to "roll back" when something needs to be fixed.
And if you trust the person you need to trust his or her opinion, because you in that moment are looking too close to the song to see it as a whole, and only 2 or 3 months after finishing the mix you'll be able to notice what your friend is noticing.

So my suggestion is to find someone you trust and send him/her your mixes for opinions, and you do the same to that person: it will take the projects of both of you to the next level.

5 tips to prepare your mix for mastering



Hello everyone and welcome to this week's article!
Today we are going to talk about how to prepare our track for mastering (click here for a dedicated article)!
First off we need to start from the basics: the mix must be done with the right gain staging, and it should never peak above -12dbfs, this way the mastering engineer will have enough leeway to polish the sound and make the master sound great;
once we have a nice, stable mix at the right volume, before sending it to mastering we need to export it and check out the wave.
There are chances that some element of the mix sticks out much louder than the others (usually snare or cymbals, but it can be also something else), and if they stick out too much compared to the rest of the wave, they will hit the ceiling too soon, so either the rest of the song will remain low in volume, or if the mastering engineer will try to raise the volume, the loudest part will deteriorate, lose the transient, and eventually sound bad.

What do we do in this case? We need to reopen the mix, locate the loudest instruments, and if we can't turn the volume down enough (because otherwise the general equilibrium would get lost), we can try one or more of these 5 solutions, listed in order of aggressivity from low to high:


1) Compression: this is the most intuitive solution, and it can be a life saver especially with snares.
Compression can have either a volume-taming function or a tone-shaping one.
It's an extremely versatile tool that is very good to add weight to our sound and at the same time level out the unwanted peaks, and in some instrument (especially drums) it's fundamental to avoid the peaks to eat out all of our headroom.
A very delicate mix bus compression can also be used in the mix track, but keep it at a ratio very low (for example 2:1), because we must keep in mind that all the various compressors that we put in the individual tracks, groups, busses, master etc, will eventually sum up and can ruin our final tone.

2) Saturation: saturation comes in many types and forms and it can be extremely coloring, which can ruin our sound, or very subtle.
A pinch of saturation can help smoothing out some transient, add some warmth to the tone without degrading it, and it can provide a hint of vintage feel that in modern digital productions could be very useful (especially on cymbals), just make sure not to overdo it.

3) Console simulation: character is the keyword here.
A console simulation tries to recreate the slight compression and saturation of the historical consoles used in the big studios, and we can consider it as a sum of the points 1 and 2, especially those that have a dedicated saturation knob such as Sonimus Satson cs, some of the Waves audio ones, or the Terry West ones.
They can add some character to our tone, which is more subtle than real coloring, but if used on various tracks it can give good results.

4) Transient shaper: if we need a more aggressive transient control but we don't want either to compress or to equalize, there is a third way: to manipulate the transient with a transient shaper.
This is a tool that works on the curve itself trying to preserve it but making it at the same time poke more or less through the mix: if the snare is disappearing, this can be a way to make it cut through, if it's too present, we can make it a bit less harsh.

5) Limiting: this is a bit of a final solution, but actually several mix engineers are using it: it's used to limit a single track in the mix, in order to make sure it will never be louder that a set amount.
As for compression, we need to be very careful: a limiter, if too drastic, will literally suck away the life out of our sound by killing completely the transient, and in my opinion it's a good idea to use it only if we have some extremely fluctuating track like a finger picked bass or a particularly dynamic acoustic drumset.
The key here is to use compression to even out the hits, and then to put a limiter not too aggressive just to tame the few hits that goes completely off the chart.

Once we have solved our headroom consuming problems we can export the track (in stereo, 24 bit) and check it again: if the loudest elements are a bit more in control we can send it to master, and the final song will be clear and powerful.

Normalizer vs Maximizer vs Limiter: what's the difference? (With free Vst Plugin)

Today we are going to expand our knowledge about Limiters by clarifying a fundamental difference: the difference between a limiter and a maximizer.
Sometimes in mastering suites or in the plugin bundles that comes with a Daw these two concepts are exchangable, like they mean the same thing, but it's not exaclty like that, and today we are going to see why.

We have already covered what a Limiter is: it is a tool that takes a track at mixing volume (usually around -12db) and that sets a ceiling that cannot be surpassed, then with the gain control we can gradually rise the volume until it sounds on par with the commercial tracks (this is if we are using the limiter for Mastering, but we can use it also to tame certain single tracks in a mix).

A Maximizer instead is not only a limiter but it includes also one: it is a tool used to get the most volume out of our recording by applying 2 different processes to our track: a Limiter and a Normalizer.

A Normalizer is a processor that takes the loudest peak of our signal and boosts the whole track until this peak reaches the set ceiling, but the maximizer first applies a Limiter that levels down the loudest parts (according to the a selected threshold) and THEN applies a Normalizer, thus first reducing the dynamic range of the track and then rising the overall volume.
The reduced headroom creates more space in which we can pump up our track.

While a Limiter as we have said can be used also on single tracks during the mixing phase, a maximizer is used almost exclusively during mastering, therefore it often features dithering and other tools made to finalize the track: unless you are using it for mastering, you might want to turn these extra features off.

Which one to use? It depends on the type of music: if the music is very uncompressed and presents a lot of headroom, a maximizer can help in reducing the excessive dynamic range, but if the song is already quite compressed (e.g. edm) the dynamic range can be already little, and a maximizer can end up in creating distortion artifacts and messing with the low end, by producing a "pump" effect that is rarely desired.

My final suggestion is to use a Limiter as a general rule, and to switch to a Maximizer only if the mix sounds still weak and too many loud peaks that eats up too much headroom, but be always very careful in leaving enough dynamic range in your song, or it will become ear fatiguing and less enjoyable.

Now that we have a very basic explaination of the main values to check out we can see the chart with the suggested levels for the various environments: we should use good metering tools during mastering and keep in mind the main reproduction platform our mix will be played from if we want to optimize the quality:

Obviously these values can be modified according to the genre, just keep them in mind as maximum limits not to cross, then if you have for example a jazz song with 16db of dynamic range it's absolutely fine!

Mastering levels for streaming, cd and club play PART 1/2



Hello and welcome to this week's article!

Today we are going to expand our mastering articles about metering and the loudness war with some average guideline about the correct levels to use, in order to make our songs play at their best in the various environments.

Why do we need a specific type of mastering for a specific purpose? Why can't we use the classic cd mastering for all platforms?
Of course we can, the problem is that several platforms perform some processing to the track on their own, usually compression, or limiting/maximizing, to reduce the differences in level between the songs, and we need to anticipate those moves in order to avoid a mix that distorts, or that sounds too squashed.

Before getting into the numbers we need to get acquainted with 3 acronyms:

Loudness Units Full Scale (LUFS): it's the scale used to describe the perceived loudness of audio material. Until some year ago, due to the loudness war that was raging in radio and tv, mastering engineers were encouraged to push the perceived loudness as far as possible, while today streaming services lowers the volume of the louder tracks to make them all fit in a same standard, and this encourages the mastering engineers to do the exact opposite: the idea is to privilege sound quality over a song that's constantly on the verge of distortion.

Decibel True Peak dBTP: when we record a sound with our audio interface, the analog curve (which is rounded) becames a serie of ones and zeroes, basically a ladder, and when we export the mix to reproduce it, the reproduction device (for example a stereo) needs to turn it back into a curve; doing so it rounds also the loudest parts (which sometimes can become flat in the digital realm), and this can result in a slight increase in volume.
This is the reason why we shouldn't master our tracks with output 0db, because with the conversion process, it can turn easily into distortion.
How do we solve? We need to master at a slightly lower peak (for example -0.5db) in order to avoid this "inter sample distortion".

Dynamic Range (DR): this third and last criteria is extremely important: it's the distance between the quietest (the "short term LUFS") and the loudest parts (the peaks) of our mix. If it's too reduced it means the song is overcompressed or overlimited, and this means that probably the transients, which are the punchiness of the song, are getting lost.
Nailing the right dynamic range is essential for a good mastering, and as a general rule we should never have a dynamic range lower than 8db: the lower the number, the minor the range.

Top 10 Free Vst Plugins 2018



Hello and welcome to this week's article!
Today we are talking about 10 FREE Vst plugin that we suggest you to try, they can be a good start for a small low budget home recording project, and they can provide you a wide array of tools to get in the recording world at zero cost.

It's important to point out that not all of them came out in 2018, but this is a basic package we suggest to download if you are new with recordings and want to try some nice free plugin.


1) Ignite Amps ProF.E.T.: I have put this plugin in the first position because it's today's new (04/10/2018) that this plugin has won the KVR Developer Challenge 2018 (congratulations!). It is a great guitar preamp simulator, good for a wide array of sounds but focused on rock/metal, and obviously it needs a speaker simulator to run.

2) Izotope Neutrino: this is a sort of swiss army knife; it's a multiband compressor hidden in a super minimalist interface, in which you are allowed basically only to choose the instrument (between vocals, drums, bass and guitar/generic instrument) and the amount of the effect. You just slam these plugins in the respective bus of each instrument group and it will analize the spectrum and apply a subtle multiband compression in the areas that are peaking too much or resonating weirdly, and at the end (hopefully) the final track will sound cleaner and more polished.

3) Klanghelm MJUC-jr: anyone that follows this blog from long enough knows how much I love peak limiters; they are the earliest version of compressors, easy to use and good to fatten up any signal, from single instruments to bus compression. This type of plugins are particularly good for parallel compression, or to fatten up acoustic cymbals tracks, bringing out some of the body of the drumset while limiting the peak of the cymbals.

4) Ample Bass P Lite 2: since not always we have a bass or a bass player at hand, this free vst bass sampler can turn out to be a life saver; it recreates the sound of a clean bass that can be controlled via Midi and processed like a normal bass, and it is ideal to streamline the songwriting process, to write down quick rough mixes to share with the bandmates.

5) Mt PowerDrum Kit 2: this is a surprisingly good drum sampler, free to download, which includes several pre processed kits usable for different genres and midi grooves, and it's an amazing starting point for anyone who needs a good drum sampler to record a rock demo.

6) VSCO2 Rompler: this is a good free orchestra vst instrument which can recreate various sections
of an orchestra with a good degree of realism, although obviously the midi track needs to be tweaked accordingly to make it even more realistic and dynamic. The samples are not bad, and it is definitely a good starting point for anyone who wants to try and write an orchestral part.

7) Ignite PTEq-X: in a world of graphic equalizers, PTE eq takes a different route, by recreating a classic hardware parametric eq with a particular workflow (sections can be boosted or cut in a combined way as explained in the review), and it allows us to achieve very natural and realistic results, manipulating the sound in a very musical way.

8) Sean Pandy Drums: this little free drum sampler has a very particular story: it is a simple drum sampler composed of kick, snare, 4 toms and a sub blower (so it should be used in combination with another sampler that includes cymbals) with various velocities etc, but the cool thing is that it consists in samples created by a famous metal producer who released them for free in the past. Now these samples are not available anymore for downloading, but the home producers community kept on sharing and using them, until this guy took them, created 6 velocity layers for each one (not only changing the volume but also the their attack/decay/sustain and envelope) and put them together in this free plugin, so now anyone can use these good samples for free.

9) Softamp GT: this is a vst recreation of the famous Sansamp Gt2 Stompbox, probably the most famous guitar amp simulator that could be used directly into the mixing board before the advent of digital emulation. It features all the original controls (eq, 3 channels, 3 mic placements) and many more new controls, and it just sounds surprisingly good, both for rock and for metal tones, even for the most extreme and scooped ones, thanks to tons of gain and a very fast and definite attack.

10) Audio Damage Rough Rider 2: this is a different type of compressor compared to the aforementioned Klanghelm one, and it is aimed mainly to rhythmic tracks such as drums, bass and electronic beats, because besides adding fatness and punch, it also adds a subtle saturation that makes them even more warm and present.

Refocusing your mix and master using bypass



Hello everyone and welcome to this week's article!
Today we are going to check out a very easy tip, so easy that may sound obvious but obvious is not, since I have found myself several times in the situation in which I have overloaded my signal chains with plugins, and then I realized that removing some of them was actually making the mix sound better (the same concept applies to mastering). 

This is the reason why I ended up, after analyzing on this blog every single effect type usable I ended up writing two articles such as the minimal mixing approach and the minimal mastering chain.

A mix engineer, both professional or amateur, is most of the times a geek at heart: we love to try new solutions, new plugins, new hardware to see how they change our sound, if we can get that 0.1% improvement that we dream of, and this, paired with today's infinite choice of tools, can bring us to an extensive library of plugins that is always there tempting us.

What if I add a second compressor? What if I add a saturation plugin? And a harmonic exciter after that?
Eventually we may find ourselves with 10 plugins chains for each track, both slowing down our computer and making incredibly hard to find out what to tweak in case we want to change anything.

What I'm trying to say today is not "let's go back to the '30s in which the whole band was recorded with a single microphone and then bounced into a vynil with no processing": experiment all you want, but then, at the end, try this procedure:

Start running the whole song, open up your console, go track by track and hit the bypass button on each plugin, one by one, and listen in real time the effect on the mix: if the overall sound gets worse, even by a 0.1%, leave it on the chain. If you cannot notice any particular difference, or if the overall sound is even better, or cleaner, remove the plugin.  

You will be amazed by the amount of plugins you will remove, and the project will suddenly sound cleaner and punchier, you'll probably recover transients that went lost in all the processing, and eventually also your project will go smoother.
Moreover, the final product (unless you screw up the mastering) will sound more natural and dynamic.
